Patches for System 6.0.7, 6.0.8, 7.0.1, 7.1 should be available in the same archvie that you found this patch. If they are not please contact me for a copy.
Introduction:
This patch applies a series of menu commands to the Finder menus.
How often do you wish that items like “Restart” and “Empty Trash” had command keys? For those of you who do not know what command keys are, they are the letters after a menu item. When these letters are selected on the keyboard, in tandem with the command key, they provide the same reaction as when you select an item from the “File” menu for instance. If you do not currently use command keys, learn to use them because, they save time and are very cool! If you already know how to use them, then be prepared to be blown away at the genius of this patch.
Requirements:
This patch requires System 7.0.0 (no exceptions), a Mac Plus or better.
The Patch:
The patch alters the menu resource of the Finder. This does not cause any harm to the file in any way. It is reativly easy to make the changes to the menu resource if your are familiar with ResEdit, but so many people are not, so I did all of the work for you. Adam Stein, the mega cool programmer, has a utility called “System 7 Pack” that does the same thing as this patch and a whole lot more. His utility is $34.95 and mine is free. The difference is his is cool and customizable and mine does one task very well. The commands taht I have added are logical, so you won't be screaming at me at the top of your lungs. If your are used to “SpeedyFinder7“, this is much better in some respects. When you do a shift startup, the menu command that I placed are stillt here, because the patch makes permanent changes to the Finder. If you do not like the chages, just replace the Finder. While SpeedyFidner7 takes up memory and if you have to do a Shift startup, the commands are gone! Very annoying. I must admit SpeedyFinder7 does many otehr things this patch does not. I never claimed it was a compeing utility. Like I said it does noe thing very well and for free. If you want the functions of SpeedyFinder7 without the hassle fo it being a control panel, I suggest Ssytem7Pack, but if you would be happy with great menu commands, then use this patch. The patch will not replace any existing default exisitng commands.
Virus Protection:
This patch cannot work properly while virus detection software is running. Please make sure that you have disabled any virus detectors before applying the patch.
Installation:
NOTE: YOU MUST USE A ORIGINAL COPY OF THE FINDER. IF YOU HAVE ALTERED IT IN ANY WAY, I.E. OTHER PATCHES OR WITH RESEDIT, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS PATCH. IF YOUR ARE UNSURE AS TO WHETHER YOU HAVE ALTERED THE FINDER OR NOT, CHANCES ARE YOU HAVE NOT. TRY THE PATCH AND IF IT DOESN'T WORK REINSTALL THE FINDER AND TRY AGAIN. IF YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING TO THE FINDER THEN IGNORE THIS NOTE AND CONTINUE INSTALLING
1. Open your “System Folder”
2. While holding down the option key, drag the “Finder” somewhere outside the System Folder. This process should make a copy of the file. If you do not see the copy window appear, you are moving the “Finde” not copying it. Also make sure that you copy the “Finder”, not “Multifinder”. You cannot patch the active “Finder”, so make sure you are making a copy of it.
3. Open the patch and select the copy of the “Finder”.
4. After the patch has done its thing, drag the original Finder from the “System Folder” into the Trash Can. Do not select empty trash from the Special menu, becuase it wont let you delete the active Finder. Drag the patched Finder to the “System Folder”.
5. Choose “Restart” from the “Special” Menu.
6. When the Mac is done restarting you should have menu commands galore!

Compatibility:
This patch was tested on an original copy of Finder 7.0. The patched “Finder” was tested on a Mac Quadra with no problems so far.
If any problems arise on any other Macintosh models and you beleive it to be a direct result of this patch, please contact me.
